Program Results The Lights For Learning Program has just brought to a close its fifth successful school year! The results are the hard work and perseverance of thousands of IL school children and many very dedicated parents, teachers, administrators, and fundraiser coordinators. There efforts have resulted in a total of 35,234 Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) and an additional 1,193 strands of LED holiday lights that together total an amazing 36,427 energy saving lights!
St. Michael School in Orland Park was recently honored as the Lights For Learning Top Selling School for the 2007-2008 School Year. The 326 students from St. Michael who participated in the fundraiser sold a record 3,682 Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs and earned over $4,000.00 for their school. In attendance at the awards ceremony were St. Michael School Principal Bernadette Cuttone, St. Michael Parish priest, Fr. Michael Hack, Chad Bulman from the Midwest Energy Efficiency Administration, Peggy Chamness from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and Bernard Murphy, a trustee from the Village of Orland Park. The Lights For Learning fundraiser coordinator, teacher Nancy Ramig was also honored. St. Mary School in Metamora was awarded the Governor Rod Blagojevich Green Youth Award for there fundraising efforts. The award recognizes the outstanding and innovative efforts of youth in Illinois who are working on environmental and conservation projects. St. Mary School students sold 2,339 CFLs through their fundraiser. Connecticut students also continue to promote the use of CFLs through the Lights For Learning Program. Nearly 20 schools participated in the program through the 2007-2008 school-year. The Lights For Learning Program was recently highlighted at both the Naugatuck Earth Day event on the town green on Sunday, June 1st and in May at the Northwest Conservation District Annual Plant Sale held at the Goshen Fairgrounds. Nearly 400 CFLs were sold between the two events. Connecticut students will look forward to a special energy fair to be held in Hartford at the convention center in the fall of 2008.
